VFW announces week’s activities

Veterans of Foreign Wars,VFW Post 1212, plans the following activities this week:

Friday’s $5 meal will be chicken, salad and dessert from 5-7 p.m. The community is welcome to join.

Effective Sept. 1, the Post will increase the price of the Friday meal to $7 because of the cost of groceries and operating expenses.

The VFW Auxiliary will have its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The post is located behind Kona Locksmith, off Kaiwi Street.

Farmers market coupons available to low-income seniors, disabled persons

Coupons for $50 worth of fresh produce and honey from local farmers markets are now available for eligible low-income seniors and disabled persons through the SFMNP, Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council recently announced.

Eligibility requirements include: Individuals must be at least 60 years old, or Native Americans at least 55 years old, or disabled individuals less than 60 years old with a maximum annual household income of $25,290 for one person, or $34,096 for two persons, or adding $8,806 per additional household member (including children); and residing in Hawaii County.

Each eligible applicant will receive a coupon book containing 10 each of $5 coupons. Coupons may be redeemed at designated vendors at markets. Such vendors will display a sign stating they can redeem SFMNP Coupons.

All coupons must be redeemed by Sept. 30 for fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.

The Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, a private nonprofit antipoverty organization, is currently working with the state to provide the program. Applications are available at participating farmers’ markets, at HCEOC’s Hilo office, or online at www.hceoc.net/forms.

Participating farmers markets include: Hilo Farmers’ Market, Kinoole Farmers’ Market, Kai Store, Makuu Farmers’ Market (one farmer), Nanawale Farmers’ Market, Dimple Cheek Farmers’ Market (Mountain View), Cooper Center (one farmer), Pure Kona Markets (Captain Cook), Pure Kona Green Markets (Captain Cook), Keauhou Farmers’ Market (at Keauhou Shopping Center), Kona Sunset Farmers’ Market (at Kailua-Kona HPM parking lot), Hawi Farmers’ Market, Kamuela Farmers’ Market, Waimea Mid-Week Farmers’ Market, Waimea Homestead Farmers’ Market, Waimea Town Market, Kekela Farms Roadside (Mana Road), Hamakua Harvest Farmers’ Market (Honokaa), and Laupahoehoe Farmers’ Market.
